A Girl’s Product Guide to Surviving an L.A. Winter

I moved to Los Angeles September 2015, and I had no idea what I was getting into weather-wise. I was convinced that it would be sunny all winter, and this myth was somewhat convincing when I realized that it was November, and I was still wearing shorts and beaching. A myth, it turned it turned out to be, when I experienced my very first L.A. winter, which literally consisted of nonstop rain and poor air quality, and a sun that likes to play hard-to-get from December to April. Coming from a bipolar Midwestern climate, I easily adapted to the change, however, my skin did not. Fast forward to today, it’s February, and we are in the thick of another considerably wet Los Angeles winter.  I’m over it, but thankfully after three years of this, I’m prepared with a list of goodies that have been holding me down and keeping me fly.

A Nude Lip

Finding the perfect nude lip is seriously a right of passage for an L.A. woman. They are especially important in the winter, where everyone sleeps in and arrives to work 15 minutes late, but still wants to appear like they did not just roll out of bed, but also as if they didn’t try too hard. However, you have to make sure that nude lip is hydrating. In the winter, it’s a great idea to take a break from the mattes, and stick with a cream or satin finish. Even with the winter rain, the L.A. air quality is lackluster and it feels so dry out. Your lips will notice the difference. My favorite go-to this season is Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche in Yucca.

A Face Oil

Dry skin is far from prone to breakouts. As a matter of fact, the drier the skin, the more likely the skin to produce excess oil. Another common myth is that those with oily skin should not use oil. But if you want your skin to survive an L.A. winter, Sunday Riley U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil is for you, because not only will it keep your breakouts at bay, but it will do so without drying out your skin. Double win.

A Skin Salve

This winter, I have been thirsty for a do-it-all product. Farmacy Honey Savior All-In-One Skin Repair Salve is it! I use this on my lips, hands, face, and mainly on my eye lids when I have an eczema outbreak (which was basically inevitable with all of the stress I’ve dealt with this winter). It gives me that same glossy editorial eye look as petroleum jelly, without the petroleum.

Sunglasses

Okay, I’ll admit, I purchased these sunglasses (pictured below) on a whim with Spring in mind. I was enjoying a cold, craft brew at Angel City Brewery, which hosts an array of local vendors on select dates. ‘Dang Gurl’ is the local women’s apparel and accessory brand of my fave winter sunglasses. If you live in the Golden State, you’ll still see your dose of sunshine in February, and rectangular frames are the perfect trend to take from winter to spring.

Good Vibe Accessories

Other accessories that are getting me by this season are a rose gold cross necklace and a Melody Ehsani ice cream cone ring, which I grabbed while on sale at the flagship store on Fairfax (because, bitches are on a budget). Both are easy, and pretty much go with everything in my winter/spring wardrobe.

I want to hear from you guys!

Tell me which products are getting you by this season in the comments.
